The Community of Madrid's Emergency Hospital project was an extraordinary challenge due to the speed that both its design and execution demanded. In just a few months, a 40,000m2 hospital with a 1056-bed capacity was built to care for Covid-19 patients, designed by four of the most important architecture firms specialised in healthcare installations: Chile 15, Aidhos, Árgola and EACSN.

Challenge

ASSA ABLOY was the company chosen to implement the closure plan and provide the solutions to access the installations of the Isabel Zendal Emergency Hospital. The specifications team of the global leader in door opening solutions advised the architects on the best solutions to comply with both the hospital’s needs and the regulations in force, and managed to design a Closure Plan in a week and supply all the necessary fittings to the door manufacturers in a month. Quite a record time bearing in mind the large number and variety of openings the project has.

One of the keys to having completed it in that time was the use of Openings Studio, an innovative BIM-compatible tool that speeds up collaboration and the pooling of information. Openings Studio analyses the BIM model in a simple way and facilitates coordination between all those involved in the project, even after it is completed.

The flexibility of the installation, one of its stand-out features

The Nurse Isabel Zendal Emergency Hospital is equipped with the latest in accessibility solutions, with the aim of facilitating the transit of people and resources between areas, as well as protecting the areas that require a high level of security. All this while trying to minimise the risk of contagion to the maximum in the interaction of people with doors and ensuring its flexibility to adapt to the needs of different contexts, as it is built to reinforce the healthcare system in extreme situations such as pandemics, natural disasters, etc.

Thus, in order to control access to each area, an electronic master key system was chosen, guaranteeing total flexibility when updating the access permissions depending on the hospital's needs. It is a completely flexible and adaptable hospital depending on the needs of each moment, meaning that once the Covid-19 pandemic is over its function will be different, as will the organisation of the areas, with the resulting need to modify the access permissions.

With the aim of facilitating a rapid and safe evacuation, the metal and wood doors are equipped with TOP panic exit devices, designed for heavy use doors and certified for 2,000,000 cycles; while the aluminium doors use the Universal range, which features versatility and a simple installation process. As for the handles, the option chosen was the Sena long plate due to its extensive durability, with a resistance of up to 500,000 cycles.

In short, it is an example of the speed and efficacy of the prescription department at ASSA ABLOY, which thanks to its experience, knowledge and tools managed to prepare the closure plan for the Isabel Zendal Emergency Hospital and supply the specified solutions in one month.
