What you don’t know about the single key for all your doors

Although it is not a system that is well known by the general public, professional locksmiths have been carrying out what is technically referred to as “master keying” for years. In other words, with a single key you can open all your doors with total security.

Can you imagine only needing to carry a single key in your bag or pocket to open your garage door, the main door to the building, the door to your house and the gate that gives access to the loft, etc. – even those of your business premises if you have them? This is possible thanks to the fact that there are cylinders that can be master keyed and so allow us to dispense with the excessive number of keys which we have to carry every day.

But, in addition, there are different types of master keying according to the different needs:

  • Classic master keying, which allows a single key to open all your locks. This is very convenient for private individuals.
  • Simple master keying. This is particularly suitable for offices, factories and institutional buildings etc. In this case, each lock has its key, but, in addition, there is a master key that opens all of them. In this way, the work of the person in charge of security, or cleaning staff, etc. is facilitated.
  • Master keying for main entrances. This is especially suitable for communities of co-owners. Each neighbour has a single key with which they can open their house and the common areas of the building, but they cannot access the other residents’ dwellings. This master key can also be given to the concierge of the property, for example, so that they can access the common areas without the possibility of them opening people’s individual flats.

In addition, there is the possibility of further expanding the scope of master keying in different cases. For example, where residents with several different main entrances share common areas or for institutions or large companies with different floors in their building, or even different locations that require sub-master and grandmaster keys that make it possible to manage accesses by departments, positions, etc.

In other words, master keying or access via a single key is a convenient resource which facilitates the control of keys held by third parties and the work of maintenance personnel, as well as the organisation of accesses wherever this is necessary. You can’t remember where you’ve left your bag or briefcase; you’ve left a key with the bricklayer for a few days to carry out some refurbishment work; your tenant has left the house you had rented to him; and so on. Who hasn’t found themselves in any of these situations and has ended up changing the lock just in case? They all mean money, time and worry.

  • Do the neighbours complain about the main entrance door to the building?

Either the door slams shut or it stays half open, or needs to be pushed hard to open it, or it breaks on a regular basis, etc. Main entrance doors are the source of many complaints in most communities of residents. The root cause of these incidents is usually an essential component: the door closer. It is a component that is responsible for the essential task of automatically and safely closing high traffic doors, but which largely goes unnoticed by the general public.
