International Earth Day – a day to boost the commitment to sustainability

International Earth Day took place on 22 April. It is an event that reminds us of the importance of taking care of our planet and that highlights the main challenges facing us in terms of sustainability.

TESA ASSA ABLOY places great importance on developing and implementing projects and processes to reduce the environmental impact of our activity, analysing and choosing the least aggressive alternatives for each process.

One of the main improvements in recent years is in water consumption. Thanks to good practice projects, TESA ASSA ABLOY has managed to reduce consumption to below the optimal consumption indicator in galvanising facilities. In 2018, 17,300 m3 were consumed in the galvanising facilities in Eskoriatza, when the consumption recommended by the CIDETEC technology centre is 26,900 m3.

In addition, the electricity consumed in the plants has been of renewable origin since 2015, which implies zero CO2 emissions into the atmosphere for the 5,200 MWh consumed annually in the company’s 3 plants. Taking into account the average emission in Spain, if it were not for electricity from renewable sources, 1,744 tonnes of CO2 would have been generated per year, instead of the zero-emission value achieved thanks to this initiative.

Another example of good practice is the use of 100% recycled packaging in all products manufactured by the company. This translates into the saving of 230,625 kg of cardboard, saving the lives of 2,767 trees each year. Each of these trees absorbs 20 kg of CO2, so in total this allows us to eliminate 55 t of this greenhouse gas, one of the main causes of global warming of the atmosphere and climatic disorders.

In 2018, other sustainability projects allowed us to generate savings of 2% in electricity, 42% in solvents, and 18% in the generation of hazardous waste. In summary, we continue striving to reduce the environmental impact of our activity in order to ensure a sustainable future.

The national leader in locking and access control solutions has decided to increase the level of security and robustness of its range of armoured doors by removing this component that was used to partially open the door and see who was outside. Instead, we are launching a promotion through which a digital peephole can be added to the armoured door at an exclusive price during 2019.

Either the door slams shut or it stays half open, or needs to be pushed hard to open it, or it breaks on a regular basis, etc. Main entrance doors are the source of many complaints in most communities of residents. The root cause of these incidents is usually an essential component: the door closer. It is a component that is responsible for the essential task of automatically and safely closing high traffic doors, but which largely goes unnoticed by the general public.
